Cortisol is involved in many important functions in your body, including the metabolism and utilization of proteins, carbohydrates and fats, your body's response to physiological or psychological stress, and the control of inflammation and proper blood sugar levels. Cortisol also helps maintain proper blood pressure, normal nerve and brain activity and normal heart and immune function.
DHEA levels decrease in response to anti-aging and stress as levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) rise. Supplemental DHEA appears to have the effect of reducing body fat and increasing muscle mass, without calorie restriction. It seems to shift metabolism from producing fat to creating muscle and energy. DHEA levels are an accurate indicator of arterial blockage, LDL cholesterol levels, hypertension and other risk factors associated with heart disease. DHEA appears to stimulate T-cell proliferation and interleukin-II synthesis. Low DHEA levels are associated with menopause and subsequent reduced bone mass in women. DHEA also plays a role in the metabolism of protein, carbohydrates and fats, and works with cortisol to help maintain proper blood sugar levels. DHEA helps regulate body weight, blood pressure and immune function, and is used by the body to make the hormones, testosterone and estradiol. Too much or too little of cortisol or DHEA can lead to illness, and it is important that these two hormones be in balance with each other.
Aldosterone is a hormone that inhibits the level of sodium excreted into the urine, maintaining blood volume and blood pressure. It is made by the outer portion (cortex) of the adrenal gland that regulates the balance of salt and water in the body. It is secreted in response to low salt levels. Aldosterone then activates the MR (for mineralocorticoid receptor) gene. The product of the MR gene, in turn, stimulates the kidney to reabsorb and retain salt, thereby retaining water. The kidney hormone renin normally stimulates the adrenal glands to release aldosterone. High levels of both renin and aldosterone are normally present when the body is trying to conserve fluid and salt (sodium). When a tumor that makes aldosterone is present, your aldosterone level will be high while a renin level will be low. An aldosterone test is done to: measure the amount of aldosterone released into the body by the adrenal glands; check for a tumor in the adrenal glands; and find the cause of high blood pressure or low blood potassium levels.
